Automated Digital Photo Collage in a Bus Shelter

An Argument for Automated Digital Photo Collage in a Bus Shelter

Installing an Automated Digital Photo Collage in a bus shelter will completely change how patrons of the transportation system interact with the space. Bus shelters are transitory spaces. People use them only for a temporary time while waiting for the bus. As they are now, people really want to spend as little time as possible in the bus shelter

Currently, overwhelmingly large advertisements adorn nearly all bus shelters. Their size and illumination target passing cars. There is little engagement between the advertisement and the people in the shelter, other than a passing glance. This nonengagement by the advertisement creates a boring, anonymous space for the person in the bus shelter. Replacing the current advertisements with a lively, interactive display would entertain the people in the bus shelter and create an attentive audience, benefitting both sponsors and patrons of the bus system.

This installation will engage the audience on a number of levels. Everyone likes to see pictures of themselves; especially kids and adolescents, who will enjoy acting for the camera. Adults will find that the Automated Digital collage challenges perceptions of space, movement, and surveillance. Seeing themselves displayed on the screen, not live, but as part of a dynamic piece of art, viewers will be engaged and enjoy the time they spend in the bus shelter. The images from the installation can easily be uploaded to a web page, where it can gain exposure, drawing more people to the bus shelter, creating a vibrant public space out of mundane "street furniture".
